ENG 103 Final Draft Planning

After handing in my preliminary draft, i now see it needs a lot of improvement. Firstly, i need to focus on paraphrasing and missing cites from my paper. It is hard to be able to know what to paraphrase and what not to. I will now need to double check my draft and see what paraphrases i need to fix. I also need to focus on the length of my paper. I was fully aware of the fact that my final paper needs to be longer because my preliminary draft was not finished. I need to build a stronger argument with more examples of my idea. I also need to think of which two scenes of my film that i will focus in on and explain. When I received this draft it really helped me see the little mistakes that i made and the improvements that my final paper still needs.

My ENG 103 Research Plan #1

My thesis for my research paper is:
Based on several sources, I will argue that despite an accurate portrayal of a character with Asperger's Syndrome in Max Mayer's film, Adam, there are some real distortions, especially in the movie's failure to display the social awkwardness people with Asperger's typically face.

The two sources i really need to find is two movie reviews on "Adam". I have been searching on LexisNexis to try and find these sources that I'm missing. It has been difficult for me to find good sources on a film review because there are thousands of pages and the movie title is a very popular name and doesn't help narrow down the searches that come up.

Blog Post # 4

For my midterm i will be discussing the selfish gene. I am siding with the idea that humans do possess a selfish gene. This is my introduction:

It is very often we hear people contemplating the idea of risking their lives for a family member or even a stranger. Most often they would choose their family over someone they do not know. The thing to consider is why they would choose family over the stranger. Most of the time the answer would be 'because they love them'. According to Richard Dawkins he would argue against that idea. I agree that it s hard to choose altruism over selfishness because evolution favors taking care of one's close family first.

Sample Research Paper

Based on the Sample paper there are some things i will take from this paper and other negative aspects i will not. The fact that the writer used too many "I" in her paper made me aware of not doing that. I will try and steer of  clear of writing from my perspective. I will keep in mind that using "I" once or twice is acceptable.A positive part of her paper was the great use of quote sandwiches. I will try and use as many strong quote sandwiches as possible in my research paper. Also another positive was the good structure of her paper and I will try and make my research paper as organized as possible. The writer used good repeatable sources not poor sources like Wikipedia etc.

Blog Post # 3

Recently the idea of altruism and selfishness has been explored by specialists such as Richard Dawkins and Olivia Judson . It is questionable to say that people are not selfish. The idea of saying that we would die for someone we love is not a new concept. When one is asked that question, most do not hesitate to say they would die for a family member or close loved one. The questionable part of this concept is why would we sacrifice ourselves for them? We would like to believe that the reason is because we care about our relatives, but many believe this is not the case. I agree with the idea that altruism is based mostly on nature and our genes. When people think they are being altruistic, research shows that they are often acting selfishly to preserve their genes.
Many animals often live together and protect one another. This is seen in many species of the animal kingdom, including humans. Animals of the same kin stick amongst one another. They live together to protect one another, not solely because they care for one another, but for the simple fact that they want their genes passed on. If they are able to protect one another and help save family members lives, their genes will be passed on to the next generation. For instance, male peacocks display their feathers to attract female peacocks. According to the author, it has been observed that "peacocks prefer to display with their brothers rather than with males they are not related to" (Judson 94). This is a prime example of an animal displaying them wanting to pass their family gene on. These peacocks do not mind in particular whose genes are passed along, as long as it is from their family.
